When the pop art world comes to us

Recently I visited the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki exploring the ‘Pop to Present’ exhibition.

One of the realities of living at this end of the world is that we rarely get to see iconic works up close. So when exhibitions like this arrive, it feels important to show up.

Seeing pop art originals by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Mark Rothko – artists I have only known through pages and reproductions – was something special.

Grateful for the chance to stand in the same room as their work.

Clockwise from top left:

Mark Rothko, ‘Untitled’ (1960).

Andy Warhol, ‘Brillo Soap Pads Box’ (1964)

Andy Warhol, ‘Triple Elvis’ (1963)

Roy Lichtenstein, ‘Gullscape’ (1964)
