Planning the poppy installation logistics

Designing a large-scale installation isn’t just creative – it’s maths, spacing, structure and a lot of trial and error.
Today I’m mapping out our Auckland Felters’ handmade poppy installation, ‘Held in Remembrance’. This is a fundraising initiative for the RNZRSA (Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association) and incorporates 280 poppies sent to us from felters around the world.
How many poppies per string?
How far apart should they sit?
How wide does the whole piece need to be?
Sometimes the only way to answer those questions is to put everything on the grass and start measuring.
To see the final installation, you can visit our ‘Deeply Felt’ exhibition, Nathan Homestead Pukepuke, 70 Hill Road, Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. 21 March to 2 May 2026.
More updates soon as this takes shape!
