Testing wool pads as an alternative to foam for needle-felting

For quite a few years I’ve been looking for an alternative to the high-density foam I use as a working surface when creating my 2D fibre paintings.
The foam works extremely well. I use a 50mm thick piece underneath my wool felt substrate, which gives me a firm but comfortable surface to felt into and stops my needle from hitting the easel behind it. But I would really like to eliminate foam from my art practice if I can find an alternative that works just as well.
Recently I was introduced to the wool pads made by Waione Wool here in New Zealand. They manufacture a range of wool products, including 20mm thick wool pads in different sizes and colours. I decided to order two and experiment.
