Seven hours. Nearly 300 poppies. Two exhausted people!

Today we assembled Held in Remembrance – our Auckland Felters’ fundraiser for the RNZRSA (Royal New Zealand Returned and Services’ Association) – and what a day it was.
These photos give you a glimpse behind the scenes of what it takes to bring a globally-created art installation like this to life. Measuring. Assembling. Standing back. Thinking and finding quick solutions on-the-fly.
Our dream team – Clare Hocking and I – worked it out as we went. There’s something very satisfying about seeing this mammoth collective effort finally take physical form.
A huge thank you to Journey Digital (Auckland) for providing the perfect space (and stairway) so we could sew all the poppies while standing upright. I genuinely cannot imagine what how my back would have coped if we’d had to do this on the floor.
More updates soon as Held in Remembrance heads into the gallery for its final assembly.
To see this installation, you can visit our ‘Deeply Felt’ exhibition, Nathan Homestead Pukepuke, 70 Hill Road, Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. 21 March to 2 May 2026.
I will supply all the donation details soon too. Stay tuned!
