van Gogh and Monet – what a day!

Living at the bottom of the world has many advantages, but access to seeing great artworks of history is not one of them.

Fortunately, Auckland Art Gallery (Toi o Tāmaki) is currently showing “A Century of Modern Art”, courtesy of the Toledo Museum of Art (Ohio). 57 paintings comprising of incredible artwork from artists like Renoir, Pissarro, Monet and Gauguin.

My personal highlight of the exhibition had to be seeing my first Vincent van Gogh artwork – in the flesh – titled ‘Wheat Fields with Reaper, Auvers’ (1890). Seeing the brushwork up close is something incredibly special.

A close second favourite of the day was Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lillies’ c1922. What a day!
