The Watchers #4 – Deers Looking at You

Sarah Ritchie's original needle-felted fibre painting, ‘Deers Looking at You’

Meet the fourth piece in my series, The Watchers, ‘Deers Looking at You’. 🦌 These three have that classic high-country stare – the kind you get when you’ve wandered a little too close.

My inspiration comes from the landscapes of Aotearoa New Zealand’s high country, where deer farming has long been a part of rural life. The industry has evolved hugely over the years and it’s shaped many of the remote regions I love to depict. You often catch that same, steady gaze when you’re out there: alert, curious, completely aware of their place in the land.

I hope these three make you smile, and maybe look back at them for a moment longer, too.
