Here’s how to get a fabulous gold or silver background for your rock painting without using paint! In this video you’ll see how I apply the background medium, as well as how I draw my designs.
The materials used are listed below. Any questions, please let me know!
MATERIALS USED
ROCKS
River rocks, sourced from Central Landscape Supplies, Auckland, New Zealand. I washed these in water and made sure they were completely dry before using them.
BACKGROUND
Amaco Rub ‘n’ Buff – a blend of carnauba waxes, metallic powders and pigments.
This product contains chemicals, so make sure you are in a well-ventilated area
Gold = Grecian Gold
Silver = Gold Leaf
There are various colours available, so check their colour chart carefully.
IMAGE
Uni Posca white acrylic pen, 0.9–3mm bullet shaped.
SEALANT
I haven’t applied a sealant in this video, but the rocks definitely need one, to stop the Rub ‘n’ Buff from rubbing off. Apply an art sealant over the top of your painted design once it is totally dry.
It would be best to do a test patch first, as some sealants could dull the metallic finish.
You’ll also need protective gloves and a rag for buffing.
