A love of glass and clay

A fun fact about me. For over 20 years, Simon and I have been collecting glass and clay artworks from artists all over New Zealand. When we go on holiday, we make a beeline for local galleries, open studios and art co-ops to try to purchase at least one new piece.

Another fun fact is that I have no interest in owning ‘sets’ of anything in our kitchen. You will rarely find six of the same glass tumblers, or a perfectly matching set of dinnerware. I learned long ago that as soon as you have the ‘perfect set’, then one piece inevitably breaks. These days we just buy one of anything that we really like, and the more colourful, the better.

Here’s a great example. We bought this one-off, beautiful glass flute made by Lynette Campbell, from The Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei. And there is no keeping these pieces in the cupboard for a ‘special occasion’ – the glassware brings me joy every day – even if I’m drinking plain ol’ water!
